How do you relevancy rank? Simple. Add up the number of occurrences of the word you’re searching in your results set. Place the citation with the greatest number of occurrences on top, followed by the citation with the next highest number of occurrences, etc. So what’s the problem?

The problem is that, when attempting to relevancy rank citations, the only words you have to work with are those that appear in the citation. You lose all the abstract and full text data, as well as the indexing that content providers use to relevancy rank their content. In the following example, you see that, in two databases, most of the citations retrieved contained none of the terms searched.

Example:

Keyword search = “Hashimoto’s Encephalopathy”
